The month of March in The Netherlands is when the flower season begins and when the famous Keukenhof, the largest flower garden in the world with the famous Dutch tulips, opens to the public! In this post, I’m going to talk about the Keukenhof, which attracts thousands of visitors every year.
The Keukenhof is located in the city of Lisse, about a 40-minute drive from Amsterdam’s central station. It is open to the public only for 45 days a year, always in the period between March and May. The time period is restricted due to the limited time that tulips bloom, with the peak normally being in the month of April.
In 2020, the park will open its doors on 21/03 and will run until 10/05.
The Structure of the Garden
Visiting the Keukenhof is always surprising. Every year more than 7 million bulbs are planted in different compositions and gardens. This means that every year they have new facilities, so even those who have visited before can come back and see something new.
Contrary to what many people think, the Keukenhof is home to several species of plants – not just tulips. Many of the arrangements are made from a combination of tulips and other colorful flowers. The park is huge and there is a lot to see – so a guided tour is perfect for the visit.

In addition to the gardens, the warehouses such as the “Willem-Alexander”, are also worth mentioning. The Willem Alexander is where all the different and rare species of tulips are exposed. It is actually a greenhouse, so even if some gardens are not yet in full bloom, everything inside this greenhouses is. It has tulips in every shape and color that you can think of.
The Keukenhof also has a viewpoint that overlooks the fields, a windmill, a boat trip through some canals and many restaurants and snack shops. The park is very complete!

The Flowering Fields
This region where the park is located is traditionally a tulip producing field and so, also the area around the Keukenhof is full of tulip fields. It is possible to see them from the road and it is very important to remember that these fields are private properties of the producers who sell the flowers. Therefore, it is not allowed to walk among the plants without authorization.

If you want to visit the Keukenhof for the 2020 season, there is still time to book your Private or Group Keukenhof Tour (Keukenhof 🌷).
