What is a better way to enjoy your day in the Netherlands than taking a trip that visits three beautiful old cities in one day? Well, that is exactly what this tour offers you!
What to Expect from Your Tour in Leiden?
Vibrant City and Birthplace of Several Famous Painters
Located in the western part of the country, it is known for being a vibrant city, mostly due to the influence of its university, and also because of the beauty of the canals and charming alleyways.
Besides, Leiden is the birthplace of world-famous painters, such as Rembrandt, Gerrit Dou, and Jan Steen.
University City
Leiden houses the oldest University in the country, founded in 1575 by William of Orange. Its architecture is fascinating, because it carries many artistic styles that influenced its construction and expansion.
Did you know that the current Dutch king, Willem-Alexander, studied in Leiden, as well as many other representatives of the Dutch royal family?
In the back of the university, we also find the city’s Botanical Garden, considered to be the oldest in the Netherlands!
We Will Also Visit the Gardens of the Middle Ages
During our tour in this city that radiates youth and charm, we will come upon the charming “hofjes” or medieval gardens that used to house widows and homeless people. We will also visit Pieterskerk, the oldest church in the city, whose patron saint is Saint Peter.
We will stop by the Antiquities Museum and during our walk, pass by the pleasant canals that are part of Leiden.
Many terraces, cafes, and shops will be another attraction of our tour.
In The Hague, We Will Be Visiting…
Binnenhof, the Dutch Parliament ...
We will see Binnenhof or the Dutch Parliament, from the 13th century, which is the administrative and political hub of the country.
In the Binnenhof we will admire the Ridderzaal, the oldest building in the complex, Het Torentje, the prime minister’s office, and the Hofvijver, an artificial lake that beautifully decorates the political complex on the outside.
We Will Get to Know More About the Dutch History
We will also visit the Mauritshuis, the house where the count Maurits van Nassau lived and which today is a renowned museum.
We will pass by the Sint James Protestant Church, which is considered one of the oldest buildings in the city, along with the Binnenhof. There, many members of royalty were baptized, including the the current king: Willem-Alexander.
We will visit the Noordeinde, a palace built in the 16th century, which was the home of two kings: Willem II and Willem III. It is currently the workplace of the current king, Willem Alexander.
Stroll through charming alleyways ...
During our Hague walking tour, we will also “stumble upon” many charming alleyways with shops and cafes that match the style of this city.
And of course, we will take a break to drink some coffee or hot chocolate. We will finish this first part at the Peace Palace, an imposing structure of the 20th century, which aimed to seek world peace.
Here, many humanitarian matters are handled, such as asylum rights, maritime borders, diplomatic relations between countries, etc.
This building breathes history!
Last but Not Least, We Will Visit Delft
Well Known for its Porcelain
Delft is a charming city located in the southern province of the Netherlands and is famous for making Dutch porcelain.
The city is also famous for hosting the mausoleum of the Dutch royal family, located in the city’s Nieuwe Kerk (New Church), dating from the 14th century.
A Church Dating from the 11th Century
Another church as important is the Oude Kerk, or Old Church. It was built in the early 11th century and is known for its 75-meter-high brick tower that is tilted! We will tell you why during this tour!
This church also houses the tombs of important figures, such as: the golden century admiral Piet Hein and the famous Delft-born painter, Johannes Vermeer, known worldwide for his painting “Girl with a Pearl Earring”.
We Will See the House of the Father of the Dutch Republic ...
We will walk in front of the house where the father of the Dutch Republic, William of Orange, was murdered in 1584 by a Catholic fanatic.
In addition to these points, we will be enchanted by the charm of the central square, canals, shops and restaurants that make up the charming scenery of this city.
We also offer the possibility to visit only one or two of the cities, but doing the combined tour makes your trip more efficient and productive, in addition to saving money, as our package is cheaper than the same tours booked separately.
