What to Expect of Our Volendam and Marken Day Tour?

Known as The Fishermen’s Village

Volendam is famously known as a fishermen’s village. And in fact, until today, it proudly holds the fame of being a village. That is because, for many centuries, this region was isolated from the rest of the country, maintaining its traditions, roots, and habits, like no other place in Holland. Did you know, for example, that the volendammers (Volendam natives) is the only Catholic population in the predominantly Protestant Northern Holland?

Haring and Kibbeling Stands

During our tour, we will visit the famous dam and see the various haring (pickled fish) and kibbeling (fried fish) stands, as well as shops with typical garments of the region, “klompen” (wooden shoes), and cheese tastings.

Located at the margin of IJe river, the constitution of Volendam has to do with a dam that was finished in 1357, which enabled the closing of the waters of Zuiderzee (southern sea) to the continent. That is when the village was born!

Volendam’s Bucolic Landscape

But Volendam really became famous at the end of the 19th century, when artists from many countries found out about it and were fascinated by its nature and bucolic landscape. Such scenery gave those inspiration-seeking artists the idea of painting the fishermen and the simple villagers that lived there.

After this tour, we will cross a river (30-minute ferry ride) to get to Marken.

Marken And Its Fishermen Homes

This charming village with less than 2,000 inhabitants is worth visiting due to its beauty and authenticity. Marken is famous for its elevate fishermen houses, which “protected” the natives from floods.

Marken was initially inhabited by monks in the 13th century, which established in the region and started farming in the area. However, due to the constant floods, they gave up farming and chose fishing instead, as a way to earn money.

You Will Also Get to Know Why Marken Is So Famous

Until 1952, Marken was a small island, completely disconnected from the rest of the country! Only after the construction of the dam, it was possible to access the village by land.

We will pass by the village’s small port and visit its Church and small downtown.

You cannot miss out on this Volendam and Marken day tour! Learning a little bit more about these two villages is also learning about Holland’s history!
